Yeah, just as the title says.
Alerted by Héctor, an old presence in the comments here, I asked Jin to check out a "suspension of publication notice" next to the title of chapter 235 (which is still in the paywall).
The notice itself is ambiguous, the word in Korean could mean a temporary suspension or hiatus. But Jin found that the Naver Store interface has the series as "240 chapters/unfinished".
We take that to mean it will be over with chapter 240. Ominously, the arc that begins after Pandemonium is called Terminus.
So I guess that's it. No final battle, just a rushed ending.
(My favourite manga ever ended in a rush at 240 chapters. Now this. Guess I'm jinxed.)
I cannot fathom the rationale of telling an author to end a few months early when the series is already in the final season. How much money did they save, I wonder. But no use whining.
If at least the author tells us more or less adequately what happens to the Final Die and whose take (Eunju's, Dongtae's or someone else's) on Dice will be vindicated, I'll be able to at least have some closure.
At the very least, the fact that DICE is and is likely to remain my bestest webtoon ever, and that I relished these four years I've been reading and working on it, is unchanged.
One more thing: Naver has a nasty habit of never taking the final chapters out of the paywall. If they do it this time, it should happen with chapters 238-40, so we have smooth sailing at least until then, barred a change in policy. We shall know around chapter 236.
In that case, we have a number of options. There is a watermarked, low-quality pirate version of the raws circulating. We can use that as an option of last resort. We'll see.
I can say in advance that it was an enjoyable ride, and thanks for bearing with us.
Splicer, for the Dicescans Team
P.S.: Whether Dicescans will have a future after DICE is not something we have thought about yet. Everyone here is devoted to the series, and we've never even talked about whether we have any other webtoon as a common interest. So please leave questions about the future for when the future arrives.
