Done with DICE, nothing decided about the future yet.

  1. I go through that stage pretty much everyday. Actually, mine's more like a lifestyle rather than a mere stage. Anyway, I've only recently found this site because of the links that you posted on the mangafox forums. Thanks for all of your hard work. All of you in this tiny rag-tag team. No idea why you guys even bother doing this because as far as I can tell you dont really seem to benefit from this in anyway. You all have my gratitude for giving me more reasons to procrastinate my never ending piles of readings. Anyway, I hope everyone had a happy holiday and is having fun at school or work!! Ah who am I kidding, they both suck.

    1. That last part is not true at all!

Everyone knows that school and work blows, it doesn't suck.

  2. I really feel like you've sped up. it was about 1 chapter/week before, and now you've done 3 in one week.
Good job! If you want help redrawing, I can try. Never did it before, but I can learn fast!

    1. There must be a misunderstanding. We've kept a one-chapter-per-week routine since we caught up with the Korean raws around the turn of the year. There has been the sorry affair with Mangaholics, and then Jin's finals when we experienced small delays, but other than that we have remained in tack with Korea. We only did more than one chapter per week at certain times last year when there was a backlog of un-scanlated chapters.

As for redrawing, thanks for the kind offer, but right now we're good, Fábio has dealt with chapters magnificently and we have Jun and other good friends as support. If you'd like us to remember you in case of need, though, you can always send Jin or I an email so we have a means of contacting you, or leave contact information here.

  3. :o Since redrawing takes a lot of time and effort, wouldn't it be easier for everyone (esp. Fábio) if you have 2 artists working on different halves of the chapter, which are then put together?

Also...regarding sound effects and things like "*stumble*" or "*pant*", why are there no translations for them?

    1. Regarding redrawing, Fabio finishes everything so quickly that it takes next to no time compared to what I take to make the script for the chapter. I don't translate the sound effects because we don't do SFX in general. If the demand is high enough, I suppose I could start, but even that would most likely be limited to text-only (no redrawn SFX because that eats up time like a black hole).

    3. Text-only would be great actually. Or at least translate the ones that seem important to the story. You never know what you are missing sometimes.

    6. The paywall chapters aren't shown in the browser, but in a proprietary software supplied by Naver. Everything is encrypted, so right-clicking and other tricks for use in browsers don't work.

    7. "Everything is encrypted and only displayed in proprietary software supplied by..." I truly hate it when companies do things like that, it's ineffective as it will never prevent me from saving the content if I want to or make me pay for something I otherwise wouldn't (usually has quite the opposite effect) though I do understand their need to make some money off of these series (yes I do click on the link to send some money to the author)

Anything that can be seen on a screen can be captured, using a screen capture program like Snagit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snagit

Your team radiates that they are smart and know what they are doing. So my guess is that because of all the editing and redrawing you do, using a screen capture tool like Snagit probably doesn't get you a high quality enough image to work with (unless you spread it out on a 4k screen or something), or you're simply found a better way to do it.

Regardless I love the chapters and wanted to thank you for all the work you've been doing :)

    8. Their software has anti-screen capture defences.

It's possible to capture it in native quality (I won't go into details, though), but there's also the danger that Naver has embedded an invisible watermark that might identify the person who purchased the chapter and ripped it.

No wonder Naver paywall chapters have never been scanlated in the open.

  4. Heyo! So when do you usually release chapters?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We don't have a fixed day. It's never on the same weekend as the chapter is out because Fábio doesn't redraw on weekends. It can be as early as Monday and as late as Friday before the next chapter is out (unless something prevents us, in which case we normally announce in advance that there will be a delay).

In general, we try to aim for mid to late week releases. Early releases should be considered freebies.

    2. I can only speak for the translating process, but I can tell you that it takes me anywhere from 1-5 days to procure a script. It all depends on my availability and the amount of dialogue.

  5. Can't wait for next chapter :-) and good job guys
I wonder if webtoons.com could accept your fan translations and put them up in their website
So it'll up to date with Korean release.
    Have you tried that?

    1. Other scanlation groups offered their translations to LINE for various webtoons, but were refused. They rather do their own (which often are inferior, but they improved quite a lot as time went on).

      Delete
    2. Aha I see. I wonder why they refused your hard work! Anyway it's their loss. Anyone who started reading DICE there will not stop till they find this website, I'm one of them ;-)
Good luck and Thank You <3

    3. Personally, I wouldn't like to have our scanlations uploaded there, for a very simple reason: they use compressed, size-up JPEGs which cause faded colours and blurred lines.

I understand they do it so the pictures will be lighter and save bandwidth for readers who use smart phones to access LINE, but I personally consider it nothing short of a crime to do it in the case of DICE: this webtoon is just too beautiful to be treated that way, and I wouldn't have my hard work up in a place that does not make every effort to preserve the panels in their pristine state as in the original at Naver.

I also don't like the fact that they don't use proofreaders and their typesetters are amateurs at best. Their only redeeming qualities are the translation, which is decent nowadays, and the fact that they do SFX.

As to why they refuse scanlators' versions, I would venture to say that it is probably a policy not to lend any legitimacy to their work, since it could be interpreted as countenancing breach of copyright. Thus, they prefer to pay for redundant, inferior versions instead.

Well, so long as they don't send a Cease & Desist letter our way, live and let live, I suppose.

    4. thank you for your detailed explanation. Now i understand your point. I guess it's a crime to do so since dice is really amazing. It's one of the few webtoons that i could say it would turn into an awesome movie project with he proper cast .
Anyway thank you again and continue your great work <3

  6. This webtoon deserves to be made into a drama (which is equally great as the webtoon ofc). I would love to see DICE in real live action. Do you have any idea how many further chapters the author is planning to write?
Currently it seems we are on the final quest, so I was wondering if the ending is soon?

    1. Well, I'm not into Korean dramas, so I'll content myself with the webtoon, as there is zero chance it will ever become an anime.

I at least have no idea whether the author has ever given any indication of how long this series would be. I agree, though, that we're past the middle of it and heading towards its resolution. However, given that there are quite a few unresolved issues, I would say the end is still a little far.

      Delete
    2. The tricky this is, other webtoons that have drama adaptations are usually romance or slice-of-life. DICE, on the other hand, would require much more effort to pull off (well). Tower of God and Noblesse are both more popular than DICE, but they too have never gotten offers because it is simply too difficult to create dramas without butchering everything.

      ...But you never know, eh?

    3. I'm still with my fingers crossed that some Japanese anime company will throw tradition to the dogs and make a series based on a Korean webtoon. But I'm not holding my breath.

    5. I see. If only some korean producers would see the potential of this great story. I even had dreams about Dice. All I can say is this webtoon totally caught me in its charms. I even feel like I was a part of their world. Haha its crazy I know.

I still will carry that hope that it will be made into a drama or a movie someday.

      Delete
    6. It more than likely will never happen. At least no japanese company will ever make a korean webtoon into an anime. Japanese are too proud of their Manga. And for historical reasons there has been a lot of bad blood between koreans and japanese. Because of this, among other possible reasons, I highly doubt it.

      Delete
    7. Ah, but the power of money is an impressive thing. :-D

Just an example: LINE Corporation, the company that owns Comico.jp, a major Japanese webtoon site, is a subsidiary of Naver. So if the bad blood has given way for a Korean company to own a Japanese webtoon site, why can't it give way for a Korean company to sponsor a Japanese anime based on one of its series?

One more thing: if you pay attention to ending credits in many Japanese anime, you'll see that the animation is often done by Korean studios/teams. This is especially true of lower-budget productions, but I've seen top-notch animation done by Koreans, too.

      One can dream, right?

      Delete
    8. I think this webtoon would totally be better as an anime instead of a drama. If it happens, I would totally watch it!!

      Delete
    9. Well, it is as Jin says: dramas are always made on slice of life material because that doesn't require special effects of high budgets.

In the case of Dice, the main premise of the series is something that is impossible to do properly using live action, namely, changing a human being's appearance completely. They would have to use different actors for Dongtae before and after Dice, and lots of tricks for the intermediate stages, and the whole thing would look fake. You can have an actor work out to become stronger, but you cannot change their height and face shape in a credible way. Mio would be harder to do, and Taebin nearly impossible, because he changed his appearance completely.

And a drama running on a cheap budget would be very unlikely to portray the supernatural events in a visually satisfying way.

So yes, the only way DICE could be broadcast would be as an anime. Alas, that is never going to happen.

    1. Well, I am on rub-salt-on-the-wound mood, so…

I still need a translation for that sentence. Jin is probably busy at school, so it will be a while until I hear from her. And the sentence is too hard for Google Translate. Other than that, the chapter is ready, I have even pre-uploaded the pages.

Better grit your teeth a little longer.

  13. Hey. I wonder what “redrawing“ means?
I know the word of course, but not what it means concerning webtoons

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since I don't really redraw, not sure of the particulars, but a redrawer literally redraws parts of the original Korean version where there's Korean text so that we can put the English translation on it (for example, text that isn't in the white bubbles often requires redrawing the background).

    2. What Jin said.

Basically, it's everything that involves removing Korean characters but is too hard for the cleaner. It involves restoring patterns, complex line art and gradients, for example.

For comparison, I need 40 minutes at most to clean a whole DICE chapter. Jin needs about two hours to translate it. A hard chapter many take me five hours to typeset. The redrawers need perhaps a dozen hours of work spread over several days to redraw it.

    1. We have access to them but it's pain in the ass to get the images ready (not sure of the details for this either other than the fact that it'd take lots of grueling work). If you're looking for access, it's going to be difficult for those living outside of Korea because purchasing the chapters requires a Korean phone number and bank account.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It depends on how quickly we finish the chapter, which in turn depends mostly on the free time of the translator and redrawers. Normally, we complete it anytime between Wednesday and Sunday, leaning towards the latter. Very challenging chapters may take more than a week. Right now, we're almost always up to date with Korea, working on the latest chapter.
