DICE Ch. 86

Er.. so. Hi again. Dicescans is not up for good, but you can read all about that in Splicer's post (the one before this, you know, the one written nicely without the erms). My oatmeal is really sweet, so I'm too pissed at it (not to mention sleepy) to write properly. One last thing- this chapter wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Splicer and Fabio. Splicer and Fabio. Splicer and Fabio. Oh wait I just wrote that three times. I need sleep. Enjoy (if you haven't already read on the reader)~

  1. By the way, the "Marco" "Polo" part isn't what it really means. I think it's some chant that kids sing when they play. (Original translation would be "My ball, my ball"

  2. So, the author killed Miju and now we have a male version or our favourite maniac! Loving it! There's a shortage of crazed laughter nowadays!

to be honest when mangaholics took over i was kind of sad, because i thought i won't read anymore dice on DICESCANS site.

  7. Thank you so much for your work! Don't let mangaholics bully you guys, take you time with your releases. Quality over mangaholics

    1. It's not a matter of bullying.

We simply understand leecher psychology. We're heartless leeches of society, after all.

There is a subset of readers of any series that will resist the allure of unedited speedscans and wait for quality releases. But it is really a small subset. So long as the translation is okay (and Mangaholics' is, for the most part), speed trumps all.

In scanlation, relying on readers' loyalty is a fool's errand. I know it as a reader: when there are early scans for a series I like, I read them no matter where they come from. And that's perfectly understandable. I at least wait for a high-quality release, when I know one will be available, and read both, but most people don't bother.

That's why speedscans are a boon and a bust. For some series, a speedscan may revive them from limbo, or help clearing a huge backlog. However, for series that are being scanlated at the necessary speed, speedscans are disruptive because they kill the quality group's motivation, especially because the first version out is normally the one that leaks to the aggregators and reaches the wider readership.

And while scanlators do it mostly for themselves, most care if their work will be read by others. If not, by bother making a fully-edited release? So if a speedscan draws most of the readership, the quality scan normally sees no point in continuing and drops the project. There are a few exceptions, like incredibly popular series that draw so much attention several groups make releases and all get readers. Definitely not the case of DICE.

DICE is incredibly difficult to edit. The typesetting is relatively complex and the redrawing is worse. It is also very wordy, so it's hard on the translator.

Finally, you may think Mangaholics is bullying us, but it also works on the reverse. Kenhyungnim of Mangaholics now knows one of the most important principles in scanlation: nobody is indispensable. If you don't do it, someone will, for most series.

He can choose either to make quick, unedited releases (for his standards, late Saturday releases already stretch is a bit), or take his sweet time to learn to typeset and redraw properly and make a mid-week (no later than early Weds, I'd say) quality release. But he cannot do both. He must know that for his unedited scans tolerance for time will be very low, and if he doesn't get his game together, anyone can make a release before he does. We're midgets at Dicescans; if a semi-pro group like Mangacow notices Kenhyungnim is doing poor-quality, late releases, they can steal it for good in a second. We're just dilettantes, there is much bigger fish in the scanlation sea.

I don't know what we are going to do, or what Mangaholics will do. One thing is certain: a backlog must not be allowed to form for this series. We fought hard to clear it, and if Mangaholics or anyone else wants to scanlate this series, they should make an effort to preserve the conditions as left by their predecessors.

  8. Thank you so much for picking this up again.
Mangaholics site is down at the moment so I happened to come back to see if there's any update even though I didn't expect there would be a new chapter. Awesome!! Keep up the good work. You have lots of fans!

  11. First, let me say I'm a big fan, and an even bigger lurker.

I was ecstatic to see a new post from you guys, and words can not describe how grateful I am for your continued work on Dice!

    So, thank you everyone!

I was worried Jin wouldn`t want to pick this up again she previously stated that we should not come running back to her if mangaholics dropped it... To my surprise, I was happily awoken to this today though! I know this is probably temporarily, as it sounds like she won`t be able to continue after ~Chapter 90.

So thank you again, everyone who has worked on dicescans for all the work you've done: Jin, Splicer, Fabio, Sira, Kfmnpah! (Sorry if I forgot anyone.)
